Sime Gallery
The Sidney Sime Gallery in Worplesdon houses a major collection of the fascinating and highly characteristic work of Sidney Sime (1865-1941), the famous artist, illustrator and caricaturist.
There are about 150 of his paintings and drawings on view, including theatrical caricatures, caricatures of local Worplesdon residents and landscape paintings in oil and watercolour. In total there are over 500 catalogued items.
As well as hung works, the gallery contains some furniture used frequently by Sime such as a gate-leg table, which contains two portfolios of Sime’s work and various publications of interest. There is also a tallboy containing his original sketch books, numerous oil paintings, etchings, watercolour sketches, drawings and caricatures, and press cuttings.
The gallery itself is on the first floor of Worplesdon Memorial Hall and is only accessible via steps. The the path to the gallery is adjacent to the wrought-iron Sime Gallery bench.
We also have a little café in the Tovey Room – the ‘Ta Ta Café’ can be found just before the entrance to Gallery. Tea, coffee, cold drinks and homemade cake served.
